This chapter explores the importance of 'reading' or 'scrutinising' the signs of the times as both an evangelical and ecclesial imperative. This is to understand pastoral theology as a hermeneutical activity. Vatican II, specifically Gaudium et Spes, urges such a scrutiny. However, the complexity of this endeavour is shown by the fact that the Council which sought to 'read' the modern world has itself become the object of intense and varied readings, as we continue to seek an adequate 'hermeneutic' of Vatican II and its aftermath.
