    Abstract

This article explores ways in which the practice of asceticism can become distorted and destructive, and draws on the Christian tradition to suggest ways in which these distortions can be corrected. The argument is that the practice of asceticism remains legitimate today, although its application will require both attention to the wisdom of the tradition and imagination in applying it to a new situation.
